“SHADOWS & LIGHT”
At the Kuala Lumpur Photography Festival (KLPF) in November 2017, Azul did a presentation entitled “Shadows & Light: Seeing in Black & White”.
The presentation focused on training the eyes to visualise the world in black & white. This would enable one to quickly and easily determine what would make strong monochrome images even before looking through and clicking the camera.
These are some of Azul’s photos which were included in the presentation.

My frequent meddling of micro images through the scanning electron microscopes has largely shaped the concept of my photography. I would often seek the hidden fantasy and trace the imaginative vision in an array of seemingly normal surface.
Following where my passion leads, I found fulfilment in my role as editor-in-chief for Advanced Images, Travelution & Fotografika and director of Kuala Lumpur Photography Festival. Currently, I have everything to do with photography from training to travel, review, curate, exhibition and also a meaningful undertaking to nurture young photographers.
Fluidity
Water is not only a valuable natural resource on earth, its fluid nature is a source of inspiration for my creative visualisations. More often than not, when light enters a body of water, its refractions and the play of caustics conjures an appeal to my mind. Was it reality or fantasy? Hence, the activation of mental synthesis is an involuntary process. Regardless of whether the concept is derived inside or outside the body of water, “Fluidity” illustrates the smooth transition of imagination into image, continuity from reality to imagination.

Creating a body of work is a natural process to me, it is not deliberately made for a specific intention. In fact, the approach in creating images has always been manifested in my thoughts. In my photography, I captured scenes or items that I encountered in my life, work and journeys which are part of my natural development and evolution.

Born to be Free
This is a series taken in Africa and various countries, capitalising on the immense space to illustrate how small the human is. In the making of these images, I emphasized on the living environment of the animals. Normally, the only wild animals that we see are those in the zoo. It’s a rare opportunity for me to be in Africa and to witness the presence of wild animals. Hence, I framed the animals and their natural habitat into the images.
In Africa, we could only observe the animals from our vehicle. Seeing that they still have a living space of their own even though it is a predatory world, it makes me feel freedom is priceless. So, I captured them in a sense of space to epitomise their life of freedom.

To me, the power of the photograph lies in its universal appeal. The photographer must first learn to be quiet, enjoy solitude and practice selfcontemplation. All the unfairness and injustice, the harsh reality of life and society can then be translated and documented through the lens of the camera. It’s a powerful tool for self-expression. Ultimately, the essence of eternity is what I pursue.

To me, photography is a focus in life and a way of liberal thinking. I enjoy very much indeed my solo photographing outings which allow me to communicate freely with myself. My policy is “Not to be overly concerned with comment on your work, most important is what have you said to yourself in the process of photographing”
I was trained at PCP Art of Photography in 2005 and took on an editorial role at PCP Publications in 2006. Now I am the executive editor of Photo Creator magazine and instructor of PCP Art of Photography.
Origin.Intention
Every ordinary person has its unique character. Even in an extremely difficult situation, everyone should maintain one’s own character and intention. Should there be a time when the intention is lost in the darkness, life will become aimless and determination will disintegrate.
