2026 제 19회 전주포토페스티벌에 초대하며..
사진은 오랫동안 세계를 기록하는 가장 직접적인 매체로 이해되어 왔습니다. 셔터가 눌리는 순간, 현실의 한 장면은 이미지로 고정되고 사진은 그 순간의 증거로 존재했습니다. 그러나 오늘날 우리는 사진을 더 이상 단순한 기록의 장치로만 이해할 수 없는 환경 속에 살고 있습니다. 디지털 기술의 발전과 이미지 생산 도구의 보편화는 사진의 개념과 역할을 근본적으로 변화시키고 있습니다.
이미지는 이제 카메라에 의해 포착되기보다는 데이터로 생성되고, 복제되며, 다양한 매체와 결합하면서 끊임없이 변형되고 확장됩니다. 이러한 변화 속에서 사진은 하나의 완결된 결과물이 아니라 과정과 구조, 시간의 흐름 속에서 생성되는 매체로 새롭게 이해되고 있습니다.
제19회 전주포토페스티벌은 이러한 시대적 변화 속에서 “포스트-포토그라피; 부재의 증명 Post-photography; Proof of Absence”이라는 주제를 통해 사진의 현재와 미래를 함께 사유思惟하고자 합니다. 여기서 말하는 ‘부재’란 존재하지 않음을 의미하지 않습니다. 오히려 우리가 그동안 충분히 인식하지 못했던 요소들 - 시간의 개입, 데이터의 축적, 물질의 변화, 연출과 수행, 그리고 감각의 확장 - 을 새롭게 드러내는 개념입니다. 이번 사진제는 다양한 전시와 세미나, 워크숍을 통해 사진이 어떻게 생성되고 변화하며 확장되는지를 여러 방식으로 탐구합니다. 작가들은 더 이상 단순히 현실을 기록하는 존재가 아니라, 이미지가 발생하는 조건과 환경을 설계하는 창작자로서 새로운 역할을 제시합니다.
전주국제사진제는 이러한 질문들을 통해 사진의 정의를 다시 생각해 보는 열린 장이 되기를 바랍니다. 우리가 익숙하게 바라보던 이미지의 이면에 숨겨져 있던 과정과 시간, 그리고 보이지 않는 조건들이 드러나는 순간, 사진은 다시 새로운 가능성을 시작하게 될 것입니다.
전주라는 도시에서 펼쳐지는 이번 사진제가 예술가와 관람객 모두에게 깊은 사유와 새로운 영감을 제공하는 시간이 되기를 바랍니다. 사진이 만들어지는 방식과 그 의미를 함께 탐색하는 이 여정에 여러분을 초대합니다. 아울러 지속적으로 관심을 가져주신 기관, 언론, 지역주민 여러분들과 행사를 기획하고 집행한 운영위원들게 마음깊이 감사의 마음을 전합니다.

Invitation to the 19th Jeonju Photo Festival 2026
Photography has long been understood as one of the most direct mediums for recording the world. At the moment the shutter is pressed, a fragment of reality is fixed as an image, and the photograph exists as evidence of that moment. Today, however, we live in an environment where photography can no longer be understood merely as a device for documentation. The advancement of digital technology and the widespread availability of image-making tools are fundamentally transforming the concept and role of photography.
Images are no longer simply captured by cameras; they are generated as data, replicated, and continuously transformed and expanded through their convergence with various media. Within this shift, photography is being redefined not as a completed outcome, but as a medium produced through processes, structures, and the flow of time.
The 19th Jeonju Photo Festival seeks to reflect on the present and future of photography under the theme “Post-Photography; Proof of Absence.” Here, “absence” does not signify nonexistence. Rather, it refers to elements that have not been sufficiently recognized until now—such as the intervention of time, the accumulation of data, material transformation, staging and performance, and the expansion of perception—revealed in new ways. Through a wide range of exhibitions, seminars, and workshops, this festival explores how photography is generated, transformed, and expanded. Artists are no longer merely recorders of reality, but creators who design the conditions and environments in which images come into being, presenting new roles for photographic practice.
Through these inquiries, the Jeonju International Photo Festival aims to become an open platform for reconsidering the definition of photography. When the hidden processes, time, and invisible conditions behind the images we are accustomed to viewing are revealed, photography will once again open itself to new possibilities.
We hope that this festival, unfolding in the city of Jeonju, will offer artists and audiences alike a time for deep reflection and fresh inspiration. We invite you to join this journey of exploring how photographs are made and what they mean. We also extend our sincere gratitude to the institutions, media partners, and local residents who have shown continuous support, as well as to the members of the organizing committee who planned and carried out this event.
