올해로 전주국제사진제가 9회를 맞이하게 되었습니다. 회를 거듭할 수록 디지털사진술의 눈부신 발전으로 사진술의 정의와 의미를 가늠하기가 무척이나 힘든 것이 사실입니다. 그런 연유로 금년에 치러지는 주제전 “사실/허구”에 다양한 작가들이 한국에 처음 선보이는 실험적인 작품들을 만날 수 있는 뜻 깊은 전시회에 여러분을 정중히 초대합니다.
포스트모더니즘 시대의 사진술은 과거의 것과 분명한 차별성을 띄는데, 이는 사진작가의 심리적 측면이 강하게 부각된다는 특징을 갖는다는 점이다. 오늘날 디지털 사진의 등장은 이미지 고정을 위한 광학술의 기본이 변형이 되어, 과거 아날로그가 지닌 사진 미학과는 또 다른 의미로 대중에게 다가서고 있다. 그러므로 이미 사진작가가 대상을 바라볼 때는 머릿속에 계산된 구성(합성, 조작, 변형) 으로 촬영을 시도하게 된다. 다시 말해서 하나의 펙트가 픽션으로 전환된다는 점이다. 최근의 사진경향을 살펴보면 작가 대부분이 사적인 스토리를 사진 이미지에 적용하게 된다. 종합적으로 살펴본 시각예술에서의 포스트모더니즘은 모더니즘이라는 형식으로 내용을 새롭게 탄생시킨다고 볼 수 있다.
제9회 전주국제사진제는 뉴욕과 영국을 중심으로 활동하는 다양한 사진작가의 작품을 통해서 현대 사진술 경향을 한눈에 살펴 볼 기회가 될 것이다. 동시대 작가들의 사진은 동양과 서양이 바라보는 시각 차이를 연구하는 매우 교육적인 전시 목적을 가지고 있는데, 이는 동양과 서양의 문화적 배경이 다른데서 출발한다. 서양의 사진술은 원근법에 기초한 대상에 대한 해석 차이를 극명하게 드러내는 반면, 동양에서는 관조적인 측면이 가능한 다측면법을 구사하고 있기 때문에, 동양과 서양의 사진들이 다르게 느껴지는 부분이다.
전주국제사진제는 단순히 해외 작가들을 초청하는데 그치지 않고, 초대된 작가들의 작품을 통해서 우리와 다른 점이 무엇이며, 왜? 라는 의문점을 가지고 작품을 연구 분석하고자 한다. 한국의 시각에서 바라본 서양 작가들의 작품을 어떻게 관람하며 분석할 것인가에 대한 적지 않은 고민의 시간을 갖는 것이다.
본 전시에 참여 하는 작가들의 공통점은 사진작가이면서 동시에 사진 교육을 담당하는 교육자로 활동 한다는 점이다. 서양에서 강의를 한다는 점은 매우 엄격한 심사를 거쳐야 만이 가능한 일이다. 그러므로 현재 사진작가로 활동하며, 강의를 병행하는 일은 작가 나름의 사진 세계를 구축하고 있으며, 그만큼 사진 작품을 통한 사진 철학이 뛰어나다고 볼 수 있다. 이번 전시를 통한 가장 큰 의도는 석사 학위 이상의 교육을 받은 사진가들의 사진 철학과 현재의 사진경향을 관찰해 볼 기회를 갖는 것이다. 아울러 뉴욕 시각예술대학교 사진학사, 예일 대학교 사진 석사를 취득한 총 감독 에릭 윅스(Eric Weeks)와 참여 작가들과 함께하는 워크숍과 세미나를 통해서 작가들의 철학과 서양의 사진 흐름을 파악할 수 있는 사진 교육의 풍부한 콘텐츠를 선보이는 문화교류의 장입니다.
끝으로 전주국제사진제는 2017년에 10회를 맞이합니다. 그간의 전시를 되돌아봄과 동시에 디지털 사진의 새로움의 변화 및 미래 방향에 대해 심도 있는 담론의 장을 마련하도록 하겠습니다. 감사합니다.

Jeonju International Photo Festival marks the 9th this year. As the festival advances, it becomes very difficult to determine the definition and meaning of photography because of the distinct progress of digital photography. On that account, I would like to invite you to the main exhibition “Fact/Fiction” where various artists show their experimental works for the first time in Korea.
The photography in postmodernism era is clearly different from earlier photography, and it brings out strongly a photographer’s mental aspect. Digital photography of the day changes the basics of the optical science for fixing image, and is approaching people with the different meaning from the aesthetics of photography which analog had in the past. Therefore when a photographer is looking at the object, a photographer tries to take a picture with calculated composition(photomontage, manipulation, transformation) in the head. In other words, one fact is being converted to a fiction. Most of photographers apply private stories to photo images these days. We can think that postmodernism in visual art gives birth to new contents with a modernism format.
The 9th Jeonju International Photo Festival will be a chance to take a look at the trend of contemporary photography through various photographers’ works from New York and the UK. These contemporary photographs in the exhibition have educational purpose that studying different aspect between the East and the West, and this starts with different cultural background between each other. Photography in the West evidently reveals the distinctive interpretation of perspective-based object, however, in the East, multi-aspect with contemplation is used, so this makes photography in the East and the West feel different.
Jeonju International Photo Festival does not just invite overseas photographers, but also tries to study and analyse the invited artists’ works with questions ‘What is different from us, and why?’ It is the time to think about how to see and analyse the Western photographers’ works with an aspect of Korea.
A common point of the artist in this exhibition is that they are photographers and educators at the same time. Lecturing in the West means they passed very strict examination. Therefore be a photographer while lecturing at school means he/she constructed his/her own world of photography, so I can say that his/her photographic philosophy is outstanding. The most important intent in this exhibition is that get a chance to observe highly educated photographers’ photographic philosophy and the photographic trend today. In addition, it is the place of cultural exchange where shows rich contents to grasp the artists’ philosophy and the trend of photography in the West through workshops and seminars with exhibition director Eric Weeks and other artists.
Finally, Jeonju International Photo Festival is marking 10th in 2017. I will look back on previous exhibitions, and will prepare a discussion about the changes of digital photography and the furure. Thank you.
